Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States today.
Its effects are particularly felt in the Afro-American community
and in the general population affected by multi-system diseases
such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. Early
detection and treatment is essential. At the Koffler Vision Group, our entire eye care team closely monitors the effects of
glaucoma on our patients with an individualized long-term treatment
plan.
Glaucoma is a disease that affects the optic nerve. Increased eye
pressure causes damage to this important nerve. When this nerve
has been harmed it cannot carry messages along its pathways. This
results in blind spots in the visual field. Increasing damage results
in increasing blindness. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult
for people to detect blind spots until most of the damage has been
done. There are different forms of glaucoma including chronic open
angle glaucoma, angle closure glaucoma, congenital glaucoma and
secondary glaucoma. At the Koffler Vision Group, we work closely
with our patients to formulate long-term individualized treatment
plans for all forms of glaucoma. This may include frequent visits
to the center to monitor intraocular pressure and effectiveness
of medications included in the treatment plan.
