| Macular
Degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people over the
age of fifty. It is caused by damage to the central point or macula
of the retina in the back of the eye.
The macula is responsible for providing us with the sharp vision
we use for reading, sewing and fine manipulative tasks. When this
area is damaged, vision becomes distorted in the central area, making
it difficult to see without some type of vision aid. This condition
is barely noticeable at first, especially if only one eye is involved.
When both eyes are affected, reading and close work become extremely
difficult. Some people experience dim or faded color vision and
blurred words on a page in the center of vision. Our eye doctors
will perform tests that routinely help diagnose macular degeneration
during a thorough eye examination. This is especially if you are
over the age of fifty and have a history of this condition in your
family.
Our staff is specially trained in helping people to function at
their greatest potential with visual aids and optical devices. We
also offer a rehabilitation program designed to meet your needs.
